KERC Shines at Enugu Workshop as Special Court, Smart Meter Plan Win Accolades Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission, KERC, was singled out as one of Nigeria’s best subnational regulators during a stakeholders’ workshop on electricity price reforms and sub-national regulation held in Enugu, Enugu State.

Alhaji Suleiman Isa, General Manager Market Competition and Rate, represented the Chairman/CEO of KERC, Engr. Ibrahim Sunday Abdwaaris, at the event organized by the International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development, ICEED, Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement, PACE, and the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission, EERC.

The workshop was declared open by the Enugu State Governor, who was ably represented by the Secretary to the State Government. It focused on fair electricity pricing, tariff reform, and the impact of subsidy removal on end-user tariffs across states.

Delivering KERC’s presentation, Alhaji Suleiman Isa highlighted the Commission’s journey so far and the current stage of Kogi’s tariff framework under the state electricity law. He said the presentation gave participants insight into how Kogi is balancing consumer protection with market sustainability. KERC’s innovative enforcement model stole the show.

Alhaji Isa said the Commission’s special court and task force initiatives were highly applauded by regulators and stakeholders, becoming one of the major highlights of the workshop. The model is designed to fast-track dispute resolution and curb energy theft. The Commission’s proposed low-cost and semi-smart metering system also drew strong interest.

Metering companies and other participants engaged KERC extensively on the plan, which aims to bridge the metering gap without imposing heavy costs on consumers. Alhaji Isa further briefed the forum on KERC’s growing collaboration with federal agencies, particularly the Energy Commission of Nigeria, ECN.

The General Manager noted that the partnership is strengthening data integration, technical modelling, and regulatory capacity for Kogi’s power sector. At the close of the workshop, KERC was adjourned as one of the leading State Electricity Commissions, SECs, so far.

Alhaji Isa fully participated in the panel of directors that issued a communique on the outcomes. Service providers including Manpower urged other state regulators to borrow a leaf from KERC’s strides to help Power Distribution entities meet service obligations and Revenue expectations.
