KERC Reaffirms Commitment to Collaboration with KEDL to Improve Energy Efficiency

The Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with Kogi Electricity Distribution Limited (KEDL) to develop a fair electricity market that benefits both investors and consumers in the state. During a technical meeting at KERC's Lokoja headquarters, KERC Chairman/CEO Engr. Ibrahim S. Abdwaaris emphasized that this collaboration is crucial for the sector's progress. The meeting served as an opportunity for the commission to evaluate KEDL's performance since it received its interim license in March 2025. "As the regulator, we are here to help you succeed and ensure equity for consumers," Abdwaaris stated. He urged KEDL to take the necessary steps to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its services. He also called on KEDL to provide accurate operational data, which is essential for the commission to make informed decisions for all stakeholders. Furthermore, Abdwaaris encouraged KEDL to utilize the special court and task force established by the state government to prosecute those involved in energy theft and the vandalism of electricity infrastructure. In response, KEDL Managing Director Mr. Olaseni Agunpopo acknowledged that KERC's oversight has been instrumental in improving the company's daily operations, particularly in how it responds to customer complaints. Agunpopo noted that KEDL's main challenges include energy theft and outstanding payments from government ministries and agencies. He promised to use the government's new special court to address these issues, which will help improve revenue, system reliability, and overall power supply stability in Kogi State. He also assured the commission that KEDL would provide reliable and accurate reports to aid in decision-making. Agunpopo concluded by thanking KERC for its strong support in transforming the state's electricity market.
