KERC Engages KEDL on Tariff Review and Operational Compliance

The Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has mandated the Kogi Electricity Distribution Limited (KEDL) to immediately furnish all outstanding data required for comprehensive tariff modeling and regulatory reporting. This critical data submission is essential for KERC to develop a fair and cost-of-service reflective tariff plan. The directive was issued by the Chairman/CEO of KERC, Engr. Ibrahim S. Abdwaaris, during a strategic meeting held in Lokoja on Wednesday with top management from both organizations. Engr. Abdwaaris stressed the urgency of implementing flexible metering solutions to significantly close the metering gap and ensure accurate customer billing. KERC further directed KEDL to implement key operational changes, specifically to: * Segregate customer data by feeder areas. * Align database structures for accurate monthly reporting and effective validation of tariff application. A major point of discussion was the submission of the inaugural report from the Special Court established by the Kogi State Government to prosecute electricity theft. The report revealed that some KEDL staff were found guilty of collusion with customers in theft activities. Key findings from the court report include: * Recovery of ₦1,650,000 as an advance payment covering outstanding bills from guilty customers, paid in conjunction with the implicated KEDL staff. * Recommendation for joint unannounced inspections and independent consultations to bolster anti-theft efforts across the network. The MD/CEO of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Engr. Chijoke OkwoKenye, attended the meeting and commended the Kogi State Governor, Alh. Usman Ahmed Ododo, for appointing a highly capable team to lead KERC. He specifically lauded the leadership of Engr. Abdwaaris in steering efforts to improve the state's electricity market. Engr. Chijoke assured KERC that AEDC and KEDL are committed to: * Promptly resolving all concerns raised during the engagement. * Submitting the required tariff modeling data without delay. * Providing samples of affordable meters for immediate assessment and testing. The engagement concluded with KERC's Vice Chairman, Engr. Michael Meliga, and other top staff contributing valuable recommendations, underscoring the collaborative effort towards advancing Kogi State's electricity market. This interaction between KERC and KEDL marks a proactive step towards addressing sector challenges and ultimately achieving improved energy efficiency and service delivery for all customers in Kogi State.
